Some patients make hesitant mistakes are think of getting a revision rhinoplasty. This may be due to the lack of information before the surgery. Thus, these are some important information for patients to take note of before going under surgery.

Information about Rhinoplasty

  • Advantage: You can change the nose structure and the shape
  • Side Effects: Infection, contracture (The length of the nose gets shorter and the tip is lifted)
  • Recovery period: Remove stitches and cast 1-week post-op, swelling, and bruising gradually disappear 2 weeks post-op. Recover from tightness on the skin, etc. 3~6 months post-op.
  • Materials used for surgery: Artificial materials, autologous tissue
  • Recommended to: People who want to heighten their nose permanently

Different types of nose shape

There are four types of nose shapes.

  • Curved nose: The bridge of the nose is low and the tip of the nose is pointy. The nose overall looks curved. There’s an angle difference between the bridge and the tip of the nose.
  • Straight nose: The line from the bridge to the tip is straight. It was a nose shape many men wanted, but nowadays, many female patients also want straight noses.
  • Half-curved nose: It’s similar to a curved nose but only the tip is pointed upwards. It’s more natural than the curved nose.
  • Half-curved, half-straight nose: The bridge to the tip of the nose is straight, but the tip of the nose is a bit pointed upwards. This is the most desired shape these days.

Artificial material

  • Definition: Artificially made material
  • Advantage: Even if the material gets inside the body, as the chemical change is minimal, the shape of the nose doesn't change easily after surgery.
  • Disadvantage: Possibility of change in shape or infection, implant may have to be removed in case of severe infection
  • Types of artificial materials: Goretex, silicone, mesh, medpor

Autologous Tissue

  • Definition: Tissue extracted from one's own body
  • Advantage: Low risk of infection as the material is extracted from one's own body, the nose shape after surgery looks natural
  • Definition: Part of the tissue may get absorbed inside the nose as time goes by, which may result in a change in the nose shape.
  • Types of autologous tissue: Dermofat, autologous rib cartilage, donated rib cartilage, septal cartilage, ear cartilage, etc.

Materials for the nose bridge

  • Goretex: There are small holes that stick well around the tissue. However, the height of the bridge may get lower. When trying to remove the material, it may be difficult to remove the Goretex. Not many people use the material these days.
  • Silicone: Sturdy and there's no change in the nose shape even if time goes by. It's the most used material these days.
  • Dermofat: Normally extracted from the buttocks. It's less sturdy than the artificial material which may cause the material to spread. People who are reluctant to use artificial material or looking for a revision prefer this material.
  • Donated Dermofat: It's a tissue donated by other people. It's used for people who have thin skin that makes the silicone look apparent or the donated dermofat can be used on top of the silicone implant.

Materials for the tip

  • Medpor: It's an artificial bone that has small holes. But it's not used much.
  • Mesh: It's a material that gets absorbed as time goes by. The shape of the nose may not be the same compared to the original nose you get from the surgery.
  • Autologous rib cartilage: It's a cartilage from the inside of the rib. It will leave a scar, but it's safe and sturdy as it's an autologous cartilage.
  • Donated rib cartilage: It's a donated rib cartilage. If you are scared of extracting your rib cartilage, you can choose this option.
  • Septal cartilage: It's a cartilage inside your nose which is thin but sturdy. Compared to one's rib cartilage, the septal cartilage is extracted from your nose.
  • Ear cartilage: It's a cartilage extracted from your ear. The ear cartilage is extracted from the part where it is smooth and curved. It acts as a support basis for the tip, but it may be weak.
